Jua Kali is a Kiswahili term for a hot sun. It is used to refer
to low scale artisans who mostly apply appropriate intermediate
technology - they work under the hot sun. Andrew is an Engineer, he
works with Norman and his team to manufacture agricultural and
industrial milling machines in Nairobi.
For Norman 'strength , sweat , brains are the teachings of Jua
Kali' (Nguvu , Jasho , Akili ndio mafunzo ya jua kali). Of
his work Norman said, 'to contemplate after doing the calculation
is the beginning of craftwork' (Kuwaza badaa ya kufanya
hesabu ndiyo mzanzo wa ufundi). 'Electricity, metal and brain, when
they meet they give birth to a vessel' (Stima chuma na akili ziki
kutana zina zaa mtambo).
