Jua Kali is a Kiswahili term for a hot sun. It is used to refer to low scale artisans who mostly apply appropriate intermediate technology - they work under the hot sun. Andrew is an Engineer, he works with Norman and his team to manufacture agricultural and industrial milling machines in Nairobi.

For Norman 'strength , sweat , brains are the teachings of Jua Kali' (Nguvu , Jasho , Akili  ndio mafunzo ya jua kali). Of his work Norman said, 'to contemplate after doing the calculation is the beginning of craftwork' (Kuwaza  badaa ya kufanya hesabu ndiyo mzanzo wa ufundi). 'Electricity, metal and brain, when they meet they give birth to a vessel' (Stima chuma na akili ziki kutana zina zaa mtambo).
